Spiderettes stay top

Away victory at Margate for the Walking Women

Tonbridge Angels Spiderettes retain their position at the top of the league.

After a long trip away to Margate on a Wednesday evening, Tonbridge Angels Spiderettes took on the challenge of an in-form team who won their last match 10-0.

The game started at a fast pace, with Tonbridge immediately under pressure with Margate’s leading scorer firing just wide within the first minute. The tone was set for the game and with Tonbridge settling into their rhythm, started to create opportunities. Four minutes into the match, some real quality playing out from the back enabled Sherr Smith to play an inch perfect crossfield pass into the stride of Sarah Fraser to score her seventh goal of the season.¬†

Within three minutes of the restart, Tonbridge were on the attack again, finding themselves two on one after Fraser released Sandra Donohoe through the middle. Donohoe played a ball wide to Smith who gathered the ball and played another inch perfect pass into the onrushing Donohoe to extend her scoring record to 16 in seven games for the season.

A controlled performance saw Tonbridge lead 2-0 at half time.

Soon after the second half started, a surprise goal from Margate stunned the Spiderettes. Praise to Margate for a wonderful finish into the bottom corner to reignite the match.

A great response from Tonbridge saw Donohoe once again through on goal after another line breaking pass from Smith and there was no mistake from the Angels’ leading scorer who smashed the ball into the back of the next to restore their two goal advantage.¬†

Margate responded extremely well and from a set piece managed to squeeze some space and calmly slot the ball into the bottom corner to get Tonbridge nerves jangling again.

What seemed like an eternity of nervous football from both teams was finally ended when Donohoe and Smith combined to give the former her eighth goal of the season and all but end the match in the Spiderettes favour.

Rewards for a good performance were due, as there was just enough time for the assist provider to turn into goalscorer with a simple but well executed finish from Smith to close the game out at 5-2.

Player of the match goes to Sherr Smith who showed real quality in the build-up play and final third providing three assists before finding the net herself.
