Schoolgirls representing Angels are heading to Wembley after triumphing in the National League Trust U11 Cup.
The girls from Discovery School in Kings Hill will now have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to appear at the home of football in a curtain raiser for the National League Play Off Final on Sunday 10 May where they will be up against Hartlepool United.
Both the Discovery School girls’ team and the St John’s School boys’ team represented Angels with Pride in the Southern Finals of the U11 competition showing superb teamwork and sporting attitude throughout the day held at Walton and Hersham FC.
The boys faced a particularly challenging group and, despite their fine efforts and determination, were unfortunately knocked out at the group stage.
The girls, however, produced an unforgettable performance. They progressed through thir group stage unbeaten, recording wins against Torquay, Southend, Slough, and Woking, along with a draw against Truro. This outstanding run saw them top the group comfortably and set up a semi-final clash with Woking.
The semi-final was tightly contested, ultimately decided by a penalty shootout. It was a composed display under pressure by our girls, with Woking missing one effort and Abi making a crucial save. Maddie and Isla both converted confidently to secure victory and send the Angels representative team into the final.
In the other semi-final, Torquay overcame Southend on penalties, setting up an exact match up of this weekend’s men’s first team fixture.
The final was another tense encounter, with Angels unlucky not to secure victory in normal time. Once again, penalties were needed. All six players stepped up with tremendous bravery and composure. Five penalties were expertly converted, and when Torquay’s final effort struck the post, the celebrations began—the Angels were heading to Wembley.
Congratulations to all of the girls involved—an incredible achievement, and everyone at Angels is immensely proud of you.
