Title within sight for the Angels
Angels Walking Women get the point that takes them one win away from league title!
A hot midday kick-off produced a fantastic advert for women’s walking football in Kent as second hosted first in what was considered to be the league decider. If the Angels could avoid defeat, they would move one victory away from claiming the league title.¬†
Angels and Canterbury started off brightly on a very large pitch. Both teams kept the ball well but it would be fair to say Angels had the better of the chances in the opening exchanges.
Angels would have been in front early on, if not for the superb performance of the Canterbury goalkeeper, a theme that continued throughout the whole game.
With Angels pressing high in their usual attacking way but not taking their chances, it was Canterbury who broke the deadlock late in the first half. A cool and calm finish from the Canterbury forward allowed the home side to take the lead at half time.
Angels came out in the second half in similar fashion, pushing forward to get that all important equaliser. The pressure finally told as Angels were awarded a penalty for persistent running from Canterbury.
Up stepped the players’ player of the season, Tina Grant, to slot the ball into the bottom corner and reignite Angels undefeated season and that all important title charge.¬†
The last few minutes of the game were extremely intense, with both teams trying to get the win. Fortunately the referee blew his whistle leaving the title in Angels hands.
Kudos to Canterbury for pushing Angels all the way during the game and throughout this season. Two great teams who couldn’t be separated on this occasion.¬†
Player of the Match goes to Sherrina Smith for a cracking all round performance. If it wasn’t for the Canterbury keeper we may have seen goal of the season.
