‘Waggy’ Lands Gills U18 Job

Tonbridge Angels captain and senior pro Scott Wagstaff has been named as the new head coach of Gillingham U18s.

‘Waggy’ – as he is universally known – begins his new role with The Gills this week while remaining a contracted player at Angels and fully committed to Alan Dunne’s side:

“I’m really excited to start the next chapter of my coaching career,” he said. “After Gills’ previous U18 head coach Joe Dunne left for Colchester, the opportunity arose for me and everything just felt right.

“It’s a great opportunity to go into a big club with Category Three status in terms of their academy and heading up their U18 coaching set up feels very much like the start of my coaching journey.  For me the opportunity was too good to turn down and I’m really looking forward to it.

“Obviously Gillingham is a club I know very well, I had a couple of great seasons there as a player and I can’t wait to get stuck in.

“In the meantime, I am still contracted to Angels and will continue to give everything to the shirt. The club has been excellent to me since they knew. Sophie and the directors have all been so supportive and of course the gaffer, Dunney, has been brilliant too and understands why I am taking this role.

“Angels fans have always been excellent with me from the moment I arrived and the club means a lot to me and I think they can see that every time I pull on the shirt.”

Tonbridge Angels Chair Sophie Purves said:

“We wish Scott the very best in his new coaching role at Gillingham and we are sure he’ll be a great success.

“Scott remains a contracted player at Tonbridge Angels and continues to be fully committed to the team.

“He is a brilliant captain and a fantastic servant to the club.”
