Walking Football Update

Angels O60 Greens 1-2 Gillingham Anchorians

Last weeks 5-0 win soon became a distant memory for the Over 60s Greens on Monday evening. Anchorians took the lead in the first 10 seconds with a bullet shot past an unsighted Jon Langley in the Tonbridge goal. However, we mustered ourselves quickly and for the remainder of the first half had the majority of possession but our opponents moved to a defensive strategy trying to cling on to their 1-0 lead. We had a few shots on goal and those on target were well saved by the keeper.

In the second half our control of the game continued and we began to push forward a little more giving us the chance to pull the Anchorians defence around. We had more chances, hit the post but again resolute defending and excellent goalkeeping kept us out for the majority of the half. Anchorians rarely left their own half but one forward move led to a deflected shot which wrong footed Jon Langley and bobbled past him to put our opponents 2-0 up.

Again we fought back and continued to pepper shots at the Anchorians goal. Finally, seven minutes from the end Kevin Chivers rifled a shot in but we were unable to capitalise and the game ended in a 2-1 defeat.

Once again our performance is improving in every game and despite this loss, we have come a long way in this season. There is one game left for us to bring everything together and finish the season on a high. Why not join us on Valentine’s Day 14th of February at Kings Hill Sports Park 9am to see us take on their local team.

Angels O50 2-2 Bexley Whites

The 50s turned out on a damp Monday night against the old foe Bexley for what could be described as a must win game for Tonbridge. In our two previous games the team had conceded cheap early goals and Craig Knowles ( MGR) demanded a robust start, tight control and plenty of communication. Gladly from the start the team had listened and controlled the game with the reward of two thunderous goals from our England International forward, Darren Cray. The only blot on our performance in the first half were 3 running offences which were disappointing.

Bexley came out for the second half with a changed set up and game plan. Darren Cray had new company as a new Centre Back was deployed to mark/get under his skin. After 5 minutes of the second half we regrettably gave away the fourth run and thus a penalty which was despatched by Bexley 2-1. Thereafter Tonbridge controlled the game but with utter disbelief let Bexley score with the last kick of the game to earn a draw. It felt like day light robbery.. This draw, without miracles on results elsewhere points to the team missing out on the playoffs But we have 4 games to put some pressure on those above us.

A special mention to the 20 spectators who turned out to watch both of our games on Monday evening.

The team:- Mark Cornish, Graham Smith, Andy Goodall, Mark Mason, Jason Orchard, Darren Cray, Karl (Grinner) Day, Will Burns and Craig Knowles.
