On Sunday 30 May, the Yeomans Community hosted its third annual Walking Football tournament. It was a very hot day but the Angels came home with two trophies making it three weekends on the trot they have added to the Club Trophy cabinet.
The Over 50s tournament consisted of 13 teams from across the Southeast as far as Clacton and Farnham. It was a very competitive tournament despite the heat and a very tight finish in Group A where Chatham Town Ballers and Aylesford Amblers finished joint top. In Group B Boca Seniors from Farnham were clear winners but the competition for 2nd to 4th place was tight with Insulators from Paddock Wood just coming out on top.
In the semifinals Insulators continued their good run beating Chatham and then moving onto play Boca Seniors in the final. It was a closely fought contest with Insulators winning the trophy 1-0.
In the O50’s Plate, Angels were unlucky to lose to Woodchurch on penalties in the semi final. Clacton made their journey worthwhile by winning the other semi final but lost to Woodchurch on penalties in the final.
In the afternoon eight teams contested the Over 60s group. This turned into a two horse race between the Angels Blues and Greens with the Blues finishing top of the league by just two points. Our Tonbridge Pink team finished a creditable sixth with just two defeats in their seven games and tightly contested draws preventing a better return.
Tonbridge Blues put out their strongest team and dropped only 4 points in their games and with a bit of luck the Greens would have matched them. They finished just two points behind, with the woodwork proving to be a regular obstruction to our shooting! Nevertheless, this left The Angels with both the Cup and Plate for a tremendous finish to our seasons.
We now embark on a series of summer tournaments across the Southeast and more details will follow.
Despite the heat on Sunday we have received many compliments from our visitors about the set up and Community feel we have at the Angels. The Walking Football group would like to thank all the stadium officials on hand during the day and especially the catering staff who kept hungry and thirsty pensioners well provided for.
